Picture a raptor dinosaur as long as a school bus with claws longer than your hand. Utahraptor was the largest of its kind, a true terror of the Early Cretaceous.

In 1991, collector Mike Ostrommaysi found a massive 10-inch claw in a quarry near Moab, Utah. This led paleontologist James Kirkland to describe Utahraptor ostrommaysi in 1993. The name honors John Ostrom, who revolutionized dinosaur studies with Deinonychus, and the Ostrommaysi family. Subsequent digs uncovered parts of at least seven individuals, including skull fragments and vertebrae.

Living 130 million years ago in river floodplains, Utahraptor hunted large herbivores like iguanodonts. At 23 feet long, with powerful jaws, a stiff tail for balance, and huge sickle claws, it ambushed prey using speed and slashing attacks. Its robust build suggests it tackled animals much bigger than itself.

Utahraptor’s discovery challenged ideas about raptor sizes and evolution. It shows dromaeosaurs reached apex predator status early. Ongoing research from the Cedar Mountain Formation continues to reveal more about this giant feathered killer.
