Hidden beneath the soil of eastern Spain for over 100 million years, a true giant has finally stepped into the spotlight.
Meet Garumbatitan morellensis: a massive long-necked dinosaur that roamed what is now Morella around 122 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous.
Why this discovery matters:
- A European giant: When we think of enormous sauropods, places like South America or Africa usually come to mind. But Garumbatitan shows that Europe (then a chain of islands) was also home to truly large dinosaurs.
- Impressive size: With a femur approaching 6.6 feet (2 meters) in length, this dinosaur ranks among the larger sauropods known from Europe.
- A key evolutionary piece: It belongs to a group called Somphospondyli, helping scientists better understand how these long-necked giants were diversifying during the Early Cretaceous.
- A long time coming: The fossils were excavated between 2005 and 2008, but it took years of careful study before researchers, led by Pedro Mocho, formally described the species in 2023 in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.
At the time, Europe wasn’t a single landmass, it was an archipelago of islands. Discoveries like Garumbatitan reveal that even in these fragmented environments, some dinosaurs still grew to enormous sizes.
Even in well-studied parts of the world, prehistoric giants are still waiting to be uncovered.
