If you’re a fan of The Lost World: Jurassic Park, you know that the Stegosaurus debut on Isla Sorna was one of the most breathtaking moments in the franchise. For years, collectors have pointed to the vintage 1997 Kenner version as the gold standard for this herbivore. But after getting my hands on the new Mattel Hammond Collection Stegosaurus, I can confidently say the crown has officially been passed.

A Love Letter to the 1997 Original
The first thing that strikes you about this figure is how faithful it is to the source material. This isn’t just another generic dinosaur; it is a meticulous adaptation of the The Lost World design. The head sculpt, in particular, is a highlight—capturing the specific aesthetic of the second film that many fans (myself included) prefer over the more modern Jurassic World versions.
Lifelike Detail and Premium Materials
Mattel has really leaned into the “collector” aspect of the Hammond line here:
- The “Jewel Eye”: Much like the Spinosaurus, the Stegosaurus features a brilliant jewel eye that catches the light. It gives the figure a sense of life and awareness that painted eyes simply can’t match.
- Texture and Paint: The paint application is incredible, highlighting the deep pebbled textures of the skin. You can see the transitions in color across the scales, especially around the neck where the articulation allows for a wide range of movement.
- Safety Meets Realism: The plates and the “thagomizer” spikes on the tail are made of a slightly rubbery material. Not only does this prevent any accidental injuries during play, but it also gives the figure a more organic feel compared to brittle plastic.
Scale and Presence
In the movies, the Stegosaurus is a behemoth, and this toy respects that scale. When placed next to a Hammond Collection Velociraptor, the Stegosaurus looks absolutely massive—exactly as it should. Even when stood up against the heavy-hitting Spinosaurus, it holds its own as a “tank” of the Jurassic world.
Final Thoughts
With fully articulated knees, ankles, and feet, you can pose this animal in a defensive stance or even have it rearing up on its haunches. Whether you’re an “old” fan looking for a piece of nostalgia for your mantle or you’re shopping for a young paleo-enthusiast, this is a high-quality, durable, and beautiful model.
Currently, these are still quite affordable, making them a perfect gift. If you see one, grab it—this is easily the most movie-accurate Stegosaurus we’ve ever seen in a toy line.
